On the spot and 24 hour Blood Pressure Monitoring Services
Do you know what your blood pressure is? Do you know what your blood pressure is at nighttime? Are you a nighttime dipper and do you know the importance of this information? High blood pressure is usually symptomless and increases your risk of heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. Ask any of our pharmacists about our blood pressure monitoring services.
Have your blood sugar checked.
Checking your blood sugar involves a very simple finger prick and takes just a couple of minutes. This test is not diagnostic for diabetes but can indicate how your body is dealing with sugars and if you require further investigation. Ask any of our pharmacists for more information.
Large range of supplements with expert guidance.
There are endless different nutritional supplements on the market but do you know what is right for you and what will give you the most benefits? Do you suffer from arthritis or are you experiencing fatigue? Do you know the many benefits of Vitamin D supplementation or of fish oils? Ask any of our knowledgeable staff for guidance.
Hiltons Pharmacy flu immunisation service aims to provide you with a convenient and affordable way to protect yourself against seasonal influenza. We can vaccinate anyone over the age of 18.
Influenza is a highly infectious acute respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. Influenza affects people of all ages. Outbreaks of influenza occur almost every year, usually in winter. This is why it is also known as seasonal flu.
Flu can be prevented by vaccination. Flu vaccine is a safe, effective way to help prevent flu infection, avoiding hospitalisation, reducing flu related deaths and illnesses.
Get the vaccine, not the flu!
Who Should Be Vaccinated?
Anyone can get the flu but it is more severe in people aged 65 years and over and anyone with a chronic medical condition. Chronic medical conditions include chronic heart conditions, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes mellitus and immunosupression due to disease or treatment. Pregnant women have also been found to be at increased risk of the complications of flu. These groups of people are targeted for influenza vaccination.
Vaccination is strongly recommended for:
- Persons aged 65 and over
- Those aged 6 months and older with a long-term health condition such as:
- Chronic heart disease (this includes anyone who has a history of having a “heart attack” or unstable angina)
- Chronic liver disease
- Chronic renal failure
- Chronic respiratory disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, moderate or severe asthma or bronchopulmonary dysplasia
- Chronic neurological disease including multiple sclerosis, hereditary and degenerative disorders of the central nervous system
- Diabetes mellitus
- Down syndrome
- Haemoglobinopathies
- Morbid obesity i.e. body mass index over 40
- Immunosuppression due to disease or treatment (these include anyone on treatment for cancer)
- Children aged 6 months and older
- with any condition that can affect lung function especially those attending special schools/day centres with cerebral palsy or intellectual disability
- on long-term aspirin therapy (because of the risk of Reyes syndrome)
- Pregnant women (vaccine can be given at any stage of pregnancy)
- Healthcare workers
- Residents of nursing homes and other long stay institutions
- Carers (the main carers of those in the at risk groups)
- People with regular contact with pigs, poultry or water fowl.

Emergency Contraception, also referred to as the ‘morning-after pill’, is available in all Hiltons Pharmacy branches.
Prior to receiving emergency contraception each client must have a consultation with the pharmacist, in our private consultation room away from the public, where a short questionnaire is completed (in total confidence) to ensure the customer is a suitable candidate for emergency contraception.
How Effective Is It?
The effectiveness of the emergency contraceptive pill is dependent upon when you take it. Taking it within 12 hours of having unprotected sex gives the best chance of preventing a pregnancy but it can be taken up to five days after unprotected sex.
How the emergency contraceptive pill works :
The emergency contraceptive pill prevents the ovaries releasing an egg (ovulation). It also:
- thickens the mucus in the neck of the womb, so it is harder for sperm to penetrate into the womb
- thins the lining of the womb, so there is less chance of a fertilised egg implanting into the womb
Most women can use the emergency contraceptive pill. This includes women who are breastfeeding and women who cannot usually use hormonal contraception, such as the combined pill and contraceptive patch. Your pharmacist, through the course of the consultation, will determine of the emergency contraceptive is suitable for you.
There is a charge for this service.
We can deliver locally for anyone who cannot make it in to the pharmacy. There is no charge for this service.
Trouble remembering what pill to take, and when? Our monitored dosage systems provide medication in weekly dosage packs (blister packs) and this ensures that the correct medication is taken at the correct time. The weekly packs ensures that each tablet you need is in a labelled compartment (morning, mid-day, tea-time, bed-time).
This system allows you to keep your medicines in order and prevents any confusion about what tablets should be taken at a specific time. It is particularly helpful for Carers, especially when there may be multiple persons caring for the patient. Ask the Pharmacist/Pharmacy Technician at Walsh’s Pharmacy to find out more details on the system and how it can benefit you.
